I've always had a fascination with these G3 iMacs. I don't like Apple products usually, but when I was younger I always saw these iMacs and thought they were cool so I guess that's why I like them now. I want one to work on. I'm looking on ebay (craigslist doesn't have anything) and came across this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Snow…
For the 600mhz model with upgraded ram, that is a really good price, but the shipping is $50(!). I don't really want to waste $100 on an old computer I'm just going to mess with, but do you guys think I could upgrade the RAM to 1 gig, upgrade the hard drive, and then re-sell it for a profit? I see non-upgraded ones on ebay going for more, but I don't know if they sell or not. What do you guys think?
Edit: It seems everyone thinks they are shite. Well can't say I didn't expect that lol. Guess it's not worth it.

I would buy it, gut it, and turn it into a bed for my cat. Far more useful that way.

Step 1) Buy old iMac
Step 2) Put in modern internals
Step 3) Sell on ebay
Step 4) Profit

I would buy it, then proceed to put round after round of buckshot though it just to get the horror of using them throughout high school out of my system.

Probably more useful yes, but I like old tech, so for me I'd be more happy just messing with it for a while.

I think I used a couple in elementary school...

No.

I owned 4 (bought one, three were given to me), and I tore them down to swap out some internals and was running one well into 2009, when I finally got a new iMac then (which I am still using now).
The 600's or 700's are where you want to be if you want to chase this path at all. They are cute, and as long as you understand the airflow can run forever. Airport cards are nice as well. I doubt you'll be able to make anything off selling one, but they are cute.

If I buy the cheapest one I can find, though, I can't upgrade the OS to OSX Lion. That would bump the price.

They were always a heaping pile of shite, but these days even with the 'upgrades' it won't handle basic web browsing.
If you want to turn a profit, buy a broken one and make it into a fish tank or bong or something, because the case design is the only thing about it still worth anything.

Why not both?

Ooh. You may be onto something here

Wow. We had three of those at one point (blue, tangerine and green). Kept them juuust long enough that they were basically worthless when I wanted to heave them out of the garage, so I donated them to St. Vinnie.

Put in a newer motherboard and internals instead of trying to use the old busted POS it came with. Get crafty. Hack it up and chop it to what you need like it's a civic hatchback.

Because I don't want to waste my dosh.

That is possible. But nah.

Buying any Macintosh and expecting to not waste dough is counter-intuitive.

That is true and exactly why I don't like apple products lol

Why not find a Vic20, C64 or Amiga to transplant new tech into?

My first real computer for myself was a G3 iMac! I got it from my school who was just going to scrap it, and that thing was great. Then, my grandma helped add RAM and we installed Tiger, I think. Whatever Mac OS 10.4 was... Regardless, If you end up having the space, they certainly are a cool show piece. And I'm sure are fun to work on. But I don't think there's any way you could turn a profit without gutting it and making it into something cool someone else would enjoy. Remember: if you're going for a profit, build something SOMEONE ELSE would easily buy for what you put into it. Good luck!

Too bad you didn't post about this earlier. We scrapped a whole lab of those a few months back.

Aw man I would have taken one

The worst thing about this was the mouse. Literally the least ergonomic mouse ever.
What the motherfuckin fuck?

We had the eMacs, same thing but a little earlier...
PowerPC was the highlight, the rest was crap. And hard to work on. I wouldn't spend the money unless you want a historical Apple.

The eMac came after the iMac g3
The eMac where g4 if I remember correctly. The eMac was basically an educational product that was cheaper than the flat panel iMac g4
When you sa earlier, I think you mean the macintosh, those beige boxes with something like a 10 inch CRT.

You won't be able to do much with a g3 iMac. I think Mac OS 8 or 9 is the max you can put on it.
While I was the local Mac technician I threw away tons of iMac g3's, power supply, CRT, or logic board failures. Make an art project out of it, or better yet, take out all the internals, find a 15 inch LCD screen and put it in there, then plug it to a PC with hachintosh.
Have fun, but if you do take it apart, beware, you will break some plastic when opening it but nothing that you can see.

I could do an LDC screen thing, that would be kickass.

Yep, I think you are right. And there was the iMac G3 which looked very much like the eMac without the bright colors...?
